One of the historical manga made by the Parasyte mangaka that I read since teenage years. Since I really doubt the manga can be finished anytime soon, I feel it's worth to discuss the series now given its merit.
Historical fiction set in ancient west is a rare genre in Japanese manga due to the depth of research and historical literacy it demands. Yet Historie stands out as one of the finest specimen from this niche. The story follows the life of Eumenes, Alexander the Great's secretary and explore the dawn of Hellenic era golden age through his eyes,
Alexander, of course one the most famous figure in ancient west history has received countless adaptations on modern media. However, Historie offers a good glimpse on the prelude on what made his conquest possible to be elevated into legendary status, particularly through Eumenes' journey. The manga covers a wide span of his early life, long before he became Alexander’s right hand. Eumenes’ path is nothing short of epic — at times reminiscent of Odysseus — as he traverses various corners of the Greek world often overlooked in mainstream narratives.
What truly makes Historie stood apart is its portrayal for Philip II of Macedon, Alexander's father. Rarely depicted in media, Philip is an underrated empire builder who laid the foundation of Macedonia rise to power. His briliant and deliberate statecraft enable Macedonian army to be be nearly invincible fighting force in its time. If you're fascinated by Macedonian military history, this manga is a real treat.
I always felt that there was something special with Historie when I took my first read during high school. That appreciative sentiment only grew even stronger as I finished reading Herodotus Histories and recognized the exact story that Historie depicts.
Given Iwaaki sensei's advancing age, It is uncertain that Historie will ever be finished. Even so, it remains to be top recommendation for anyone interested in Greek history — especially those exposed to classical studies, like myself.
