Vinland Saga Finale

Another great Seinen manga series has reached its conclusion! Vinland Saga at last managed to accomplish what Berserk unable to do and wrap up its run. With the latest chapter 220 of Vinland Saga, the series has concluded its story. While some fans might not be satisfied how Vinland Saga ended considering the series began in a fashion that seems to be another great contender for Berserk, I would say the series ended just like how the mangaka envisioned.

Using the Golden Age of Viking as the settings, Vinland Saga narrate a story of a man who transcends through the endless cycles of violence of his environment after through many phases of life transformations. While I felt Makoto Yukimura's Thorfin Karlsefni way too pacifistic due to the Japanese Influence, he is certainly a good fictional depiction of an Ubermensch. He started his journey as vengeance fueled Viking then ending up as a slave and finally a freedman who tries his utmost to do the right things in the unjust world.

People may be disappointed with Vinland Saga not being Berserk clone, but it is exemplary work that explore the themes of Humanity just like Makoto Yukimura sensei intended like his previous work; Planetes. I believe through Vinland and Planetes, Yukimura sensei tried to convey that there are better future for Humanity instead of endless cycles of misery and violence. Vinland definitely have some really well-made character apart from Thorfinn and I personally find that Askeladd and King Canute are some of top tier characters made out of Viking setting. While Vinland ending is not exactly top tier I think the manga is good enough to entertain the audience considering the series could have ended on the part Thorfinn embarked on his journey to Vinland is probably the highest note of the series. If you can appreciate Vinland Saga more than its top tier violent actions, this is one of the best manga that dwells with the theme of humanity, Not sure if Yukimura sensei able to come up with a new work in his age, but I certainly look forward to it.
