Took longer than Pokemon series but Nintendo finally decided to cash in their all time superstar IP, Super Mario! The last time i saw anything cartoon related with this series, it was a sunday morning cartoon mixed with live action which was like 2 decades ago. Overall Super Mario the Movie is something that you expect from a famed Video Game series which is an excellent family movie designed for maximum appeal toward general audiences and it was what Nintendo wished out of it.
The storyline is as generic as its gets with unexpected Mario partnership with Donkey Kong and Luigi is really overshadowed by his brother for good chunk of the movie. To me, Sonic the Movie was more interesting compared to this version but when you look at Box Office revenues, it just shows how powerful Super Mario is as an IP. Given the tremendous success, Nintendo could easily greenlit the sequel which will definitely include Yoshi and other characters though i would expect the former to pay a hefty sum to get the Top Hollywood Celebrities from this movie to continue their work on the Movie Sequel.
