Psycho Pass

Studio IG is the animation studio that you can rely on if you need some fix for Cyberpunk anime. Finally i got an opportunity to watch Psycho Pass to figure out why the anime got such a hype back then. To be simple if Masamune Shirou has Ghost in the Shell then Urobuchi has Psycho Pass. Taking place in Japan where a centralized AI system called SYBIL that decided the role of a person in the society and their life and death, Psycho Pass centred around Police Special Task Force named Division 1. Each field member of Division 1 are armed with over the top futuristic gun known as Dominator which  then are used to pacify people that SYBIL considered to be a threat to society. The Dominator will and able to turn the target literally into mincemeat if they are considered to be a lost cause by SYBIL.

I can't explain that well but if GiTS main theme is about Human becoming machine, then Psycho Pass is about Machine exploiting Human. Psycho Pass explore on the world where a supposedly perfect supercomputer dictate a human's life and even with such perfection, a dystopian society is still its outcome as free will are supressed. With Kikokugai under Urobuchi's Portfolio, Psycho Pass at least the first season is one of his finest work as the series able to explore some complex stuff like the ones in GiTS. The best part of Psycho Pass first season is its main antagonist, Makishima Shougo who is one of the most brilliant villain in the anime for the recent time which people should personally watch the anime to see what makes him that good. While main heroine Akane Tsunemori is not as tough as Motoko, she earned her spot as the leader of her squad. Her willpower is quite something and her acceptance of necessary evil without getting corrupted herself is another of her admirable quality. The Second season is still acceptable but certainly not as good as the first one and i rather lament that the series wasted couple of fine piece of booty. All left unexplored for me are the two movies which i will give a watch in near future.

  1. I didn’t know of a season 2. That’s cool. Thx for the heads up! All I remember is at Season 1, throw the damn unreliable Dominator away and goes retro with .38 revolver.

    1. That Shogo death scene is quite powerful indeed. While the sequel is still entertaining, unfortunately the quality of the writing doesn't quite reach the first season
