I suppose when you look for a good Space Opera Anime apart from LOGH, Yamato series is the only good one nowadays. Serving as the direct sequel for Yamato 2199, Yamato 2202 bring the Legendary Battleship Yamato to embark on another Journey with even more dangerous adversary that humanity ever faced yet. From what i know Yamato 2202 is based from the 2nd anime of the 70s Yamato series which the Earth facing another Alien Race named Comet Empire which are hell bent on destroying Humanity. And then Yamato Crew still lingering on Captain Okita's legacy, facing dilemma that the Earth Leaderships direction took to defend themselves, abusing the technology that Iscandar gave in order to gave Earth a fighting chance. Nevertheless the new journey that Yamato took will greatly change the life of its crews yet again.
If you like Yamato 2199, Yamato 2202 will not disappoint with the great quality both in animation and storytelling. The series might pale abit to the predecessor since the badass Captain Okita no longer helms Yamato but Susumu Kodai did try his best to fill the void. 2202 might feel rather too melodramatic at times since it needs to faithfully match the original material and the body counts in this one piles up quite high too. The main antagonist from 2199, Desler are given another opportunity to show up in 2202 and we got to see this charismatic dictator in a new light.
After watching 2202, i got a glimpse how influential and important Yamato series for Mecha series as a whole. The original 70s anime definitely had great influence to major mecha series like Gundam and Macross. Zentradi Race from Macross are basically Comet Empire expies and the Axis Drop from CCA are based on the Comet's Empire Death star. The Classic Yamato series came in main trilogy and i guess we will be seeing the third part of new Yamato series in few years. After watching Yamato 2202, i am greatly interested with the old series which i am still looking for a good copy because the series should be quite good considering it was helmed by the LOGH director. Lastly Yamato 2202 do help me getting motivated with SRW V again which i had few stages to go to complete my first run.
