Ergo Proxy

Literally one of the best anime that i have watched in a while! I think it has been a long time since the last time since I watched an anime TV series that can pull off a proper complex storytelling with poise and Ergo Proxy turns out to be a mind boggling but very enjoyable ride! Most anime usually had their storyline put on the platter for the viewer, but Ergo Proxy is one of those that leaves its viewer to ponder over with its masterfully crafted distortion over reality

Ergo Proxy appears to be a Cyberpunk anime at first but it turns out to be a story of a Post Apocalyptic journey in Post-Matrix setting with liberal amount of Philosophy thrown into the mix. The Plot revolves around Proxy, a mysterious humanoid beings who seemingly wield near omnipotent power and appears only to sow destructions upon humanity. From what i can comprehend, Ergo Proxy themes are heavily influenced by the works of Descartes, Sartre and Carl Jung, so you would expect a healthy dose of existentialism. Apparently the head writer for Ergo Proxy, Dai Sato was the one who handle Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex script which is no wonder Ergo Proxy had some Top Tier writing.

Overall Ergo Proxy is not really suited for typical anime viewer due to its complex yet rich story presented in a very bleak and depressing setting. However if you are looking something even more complicated than Psycho-Pass or Ghost In the Shell, Ergo Proxy is a good choice. It's alright if you are unable to comprehend the storyline in a single binge because even I personally need a guide to connect all the dots.

I feel that Ergo Proxy could use another season with its rich dystopian Post-Apocalyptic world, but this kind of complex work tend to unpopular due to lack of mass appeal. At very least the anime had covered most of the story it tried to convey and Re-L Mayer is another fine piece of ass that could have rivaled Motoko Kusanagi. To me Ergo Proxy is one of the few anime that can deal with Heavy-duty philosophy without being pretentious which is actually quite an achievement for a TV series and as such it is yet another anime that stand on the same level with Legend of Galactic Heroes.

So if you want some Heavy Weight Anime that got complex but proper writing and satisfying conclusion, Ergo Proxy worth a try.
