Macross Delta

So it took me 4 years to give latest Macross TV series a chance and it turns out not to be as bad as i imagined. I steered away from Macross Delta for quite a long time since i had rather bad initial impression with  choice of aesthetics which i find to be questionable at first, especially with the singers. In short i find Macross Delta appear to be less manly than its predecessors which turns out to be partly true.

Robot Planes, Songs and Love Triangle have always been the Holy Trinity of Macross series and Delta attempted to take a new spin on it which is partially successful. Macross Tv series is usually about Humanity fight against Alien race that are monstrous in nature, but in Delta the protagonists are facing against another Humanoid civilizations named Windermere Kingdom equipped with Valkyrie Fighters. In Macross Delta Windermere Kingdom rely on Protoculture Civilization technology to mass hypnotize people into mindless violent creature to quickly subjugate planets. Whether intentional or not Macross Delta probably quite similar to Gundam SEED in terms of story formula.

At the time when Macross Delta was airing, Idol series like Love Live was quite a fad and I suppose Kawamori at the time feels that Macross Delta need to affirm to trend and thus the Idol team of Macross Delta, Walkure had some kind of that vibe. While i am not into Walkure songs because i feel their songs are not as moving as Fire Bomber, but throughout the series the Walkure Idol team prove themselves worthy to be part of Macross Legacy

It takes 8 years after Macross Frontier for Macross Delta to materialize and definitely the series do have plenty of potential of materials to work with. Overall Macross Delta is decent most of the time but become a let down near the end of the series. It is simply unfortunate that Macross Delta unable to afford the leniency that its predecessor had. To be honest the series would have fared much better if the series is split into two parts because doing 26 in one go compromise the story quality quite significantly. Macross Delta's Potential suffers from trying too much to appeal the general audience by conforming to the trends instead of trying to do its own things. In the end i feel rather sad as old school mecha fans that Macross Delta ended to be half baked product.

The worst part of Macross Delta would be its ending because it is very apparent that the story is rushed by that point with the poor choice of antagonist and i hate the Main Heroine wins out by default effortlessly because i root for the Pilot Girl. Actually a movie adaptation could have fixed Macross Delta easily but for some reason we are not seeing any news until now. Overall Macross Delta ended up to be a wasted potential for various reasons but it is still not considered to be a trainwreck. With this i think i have watched all Macross Tv series save for the first one which i should do soon.
