Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

Great anime but Overrated


Last week i just finished this series and i enjoyed it as anime in general but i am rather disappointing if i see this anime as mecha series. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is a tale of a boy called Simon who dream to reach the surface and eventual adventure for his brother's and his dream. Gainax really know how to animate their stuff and this series is a success as well in Japan.

The series is divided into 2 major plot story, the first half cover the adventure of Simon as a teen along with Kamina and Yoko fighting against Beastmen to eventual forming of Gurren Brigade and showdown with Spiral King. The second half of the series is mainly about fight with the Antispiral and conclude the series.

Kamina is probably the most popular character from the series since he is really manly while being totally reckless. He mentors Simon and a real bro to him until his death which is unexpectedly early in the series.

While the action throughout the series are solid, i find that the story development are the most unrealistic ever i have ever seen. The setting from the relatively primitive era in the earlier part of the series quickly shifted into the highly advanced civilization in the second half of the story. Then the power up of the main character are too fast as well, one episode after another the main character are getting much larger mecha upgrade. The second aspect that i dislike about the series is that the mecha technology is too unrealistic even for a Super Robot show, i am fine with the mecha running on will power but the supporting technology is barely at all considering the main character mecha able to power up by simply assimilating the parts of other mecha. The upgrade for the mecha is too unrealistic as well, as the size of the mecha are getting too large until the point as big as a moon which is not scalable at all especially it is running through the will power.

 

The anime is very good for general audience with amazing actions and shallow story while looking awesome. In conclusion this is a good anime while being a terrible mecha series. You will enjoy the series as long as you ignore the realism aspect of the series.
