Bidding My Farewell to Warhammer 40k: Tacticus

After spending a month or two in limbo, I’ve finally decided to quit Warhammer 40k: Tacticus for good after playing it for 2.5 years. As much as I love the Warhammer 40k universe, I just can’t put up with the Saturnian design philosophy of Snowprint’s take on the franchise anymore. The game demands an excessive, constant time sink and that’s only one of the many reasons I’m stepping away. In this post, I want to reflect on the progress I made through consistent grinding during the time I stuck with it.

Over the past two years, I’d say I achieved a respectable level of progress. I managed to collect most of the non-SSR heroes, except for the most recent additions. At this point, I simply don’t have the will to keep grinding for them. What truly gave me the push I needed to move on was finally obtaining Sergeant Sarquael and Artillery Master Thaddeus especially Thaddeus, who had been gatekeeping me from finishing the Militarum campaign for nearly two years. Ironically, that campaign doesn’t even have particularly impressive rewards.

But the biggest reason I’m quitting for good is that I no longer believe Snowprint has any intention of addressing the game’s major flaws. The gacha system remains one of the worst I’ve seen in mobile gaming: Requisitions almost always give you things you don’t need, and Black Crystal access for free-to-play players is minimal. I’ve spent around $100–200 on Tacticus, and I just don’t see Snowprint using that money or anyone’s money to actually improve the player experience.

For context, Fate/Grand Order is the only game whose atrocious gacha rates I’m somehow able to tolerate due to its unique personal attachment, and Tacticus hasn’t earned that same level of patience from me.

As much as I hate seeing my investment in Tacticus amount to so little, I’m glad I at least achieved most of the goals I set for myself before leaving. I’m walking away with very few regrets. I’ll still continue enjoying Warhammer 40k as one of the definitive power-fantasy franchises but just not through Tacticus.
