Super Dimension Fortress Macross
I have watched plenty of Mecha Anime including Macross series by this time but for some reason i only managed to watch the forerunner of Macross series now. As expected from the precursor of the most enduring series in Mecha Genre, with its trinity formula of Mecha, Song and Love Triangle, SDF Macross was a revolutionary work and way ahead of its time by a decade at very least.
The 36 Episode Tv Series surprisingly doesn't age that bad and while it is not perfec,t the storyline are still better than the typical mecha anime of its time. But being on Sponsor payroll with the standard of mecha anime at the time, SDF Macross do have limitations as TV series. From what i am able to grasp, the TV series lasted more than the production staff originally intended which results in some mess with the story. The first 13 episodes of SDF Macross are well planned then gone slightly downhill but properly concluded by 28th Episodes and finally the last 8 episodes are mess. The way that the original love triangle is concluded is really messy mainly due to Ichijo Hikaru being wishy-washy and Lynn Kaifun being part of the equation. Nevertheless most of the issues are fixed with DYRL movie which is just on whole another level. Lastly i am just surprised that Roy Focker met rather anticlimatic end in the original TV series.
Handled by some of the best talent at the time, SDF Macross represents the Hope and Dream of mecha series, proving that there are future for the genre apart from being a mere Glorified Toys Commercial. But one may wonder why a terrible fate befall to Macross that it is denied its rightful place on Global Stage just because of stupid debacle deal of Tatsunoko with Harmony Gold. Nevertheless The legacy that the first Macross series leave behind still secure the future of Macross as a whole until Kawamori screwed up the IP real bad, so he still had couple of chances after Macross Delta.
Overall Macross Do You Remember Love trumps over SDF Macross overall as it is the lean and mean version of the former. But watching SDF Macross makes me appreciate DYRL even better because without the former's sacrifice, we won't be seeing the DYRL Movie make full use of its potential that landed itself a place as timeless Masterpiece. But if i have to say one thing that SDF Macross did better than DYRL it is probably the way the TV series handled Max & Millia romance which are just more wholesome.
With SDF Macross cleared, i have completed my journey on yet another longstanding Mecha series apart from Gundam. This journey takes time longer than intended but still a pleasant one in the end. Maybe i will even come up with my ranking list for Macross series which possibly come up faster than the Gundam one though i need to revisit some of the Macross titles probably.

My all time fav! Macross and not Robotech... But thanx to Robotech, this classic was introduced to massive outside Japan.
ReplyDeleteBut Harmony Gold's greed no doubt frustrates Kawamori over these past 30 years.
