- Revised February 2026
Another mecha series completed, and this one essentially wraps up my journey through Ryosuke Takahashi’s works. I started with Armored Trooper VOTOMS and ended with Panzer World Galient, which isn’t a bad place to finish.
Among Takahashi’s series, Galient is the only one to blend fantasy with mecha though it occasionally leans futuristic. Its storyline follows a classic JRPG setup: a prince from a fallen kingdom battles a tyrannical overlord to reclaim his nation. The ending, however, takes a different turn likely because the show was cut short, similar to The Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross (Layzner).
VOTOMS remains my top pick because it has the best mecha action sequences, while Dougram still has the strongest story though its aging animation prevents it from taking first place.
Galient also had an OVA called Crest of Iron, which fully commits to the fantasy angle. Unfortunately, it feels messy and doesn’t quite live up to the original. Still, Panzer World Galient made an important contribution to fantasy mecha. Escaflowne clearly drew inspiration from it and tried to fill the same niche though it ultimately falls short in my view. If Super Robot Wars ever assembles a purely fantasy-themed mecha lineup, I’d love to see Galient and Escaflowne fighting side by side.
By now i have finished Votoms, Dougram, Layzner, Gasaraki, Blue Gender and finally Galient which covers most of Takahashi's work, if i got interest probably i will take a look on FLAG.

If you have some free time watch Vifam, I am a really big fan of it and it fits well even if it is not made by Takahashi
ReplyDeleteI had Vifam on my watchlist but i think i need to finish Dunbine first before moving onto that one
DeleteDunbine have GREAT ending, but it is not "good" ending. Only problem I had with it was that there were nearly 0 fights with monsters, and on ALL arts they showed it fighting with giant monsters (that the Aura Battlers are made from their's pieces)
DeleteI gotta say I found blog that still alive in 2019. Keep it up.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the word of encouragement!
DeleteWow, I found your blog by chance while looking for some model kits on Google images. I used to visit it ten years ago. Glad that you're still active!
ReplyDeleteWhile i didn't do much Model kit review nowadays, i am still trying to be active as possible for mecha. But thanks for the support!
