Back in 90s during the Golden age of Arcade Games, SNK and Capcom reigns at the top with their fighting game and known for their rivalry in this genre. A decade forward when Console games become more dominant and before each of the company went separate own ways, they left behind a legacy for the fans to remember the good old times. That legacy comes in the crossover SNK vs Capcom games series which are mainly fighting games but a Card Game series also spawned out of the cooperative effort.
The SNK vs Capcom Card Game i that played was the DS version which is probably the most widely available version of the series for International fans. I played the game more than a decade ago but it was not until now that i managed to settle the score with this game. The game allows you to pit characters from SNK and Capcom games in Card Game format and this format enables the greatest amount of roster from both SNK and Capcom's Library compared to the Fighting game. In terms of the roster SvC Card Clash had most of the cards from SNK and Capcom works in 90s though rather lacking from their 2000s games
In terms of gameplay mechanics, SNK vs Capcom Card Clash DS are quite simple as you are trying to field Character's card which have their own life and attack point stats and your aim is to reduce opponent's life point to 0. The Character Cards are divided into 4 different Color factions which have their own characteristics. Compared to other major card game such as MTG or Yugioh, SvC Card Clash leans on to simpler side as the game put heavy emphasis on Character cards with the equivalent of Trap and Spell cards served as supporting role.
The main key in SVC Card Clash DS is about field control as try to deploy more character cards preferrably better quality ones against the opponents. As the life point limits are comparatively low, Rushing style are the most effective one to use and I mainly use Green and Yellow Deck to serve this purpose as the stronger characters from those two color factions are easier to field in.
In the story mode, the main character fights in the Card Tower and climbs through by fighting other Card Fighters. At some point the path diverge into SNK and Capcom Route but it is better to stick at one route in a single playthrough. Overall SNK route is easier for first playthrough since the strong SNK character cards are easily accessible in early-mid game where as most of Capcom's are only obtainable at second playthrough. If i have to recommend particular favorites, The Last Blade series character cards are particularly cost effective cards.
The Heart and Soul of SvC Card Clash lies in the Card Fight with the gorgeous card illustration which come at a cost as everything else are lackluster. The original story and characters are laughably bad which is not helped with poor localization. However the game is still somewhat decent if you can put up with the glaring flaw.
SvC Card Clash might not be the best Card Game out there but it wins out in Nostalgia factor if you are big fan of either SNK and Capcom in particular their fighting games. I wished both company could consider to make their Crossover games available on modern consoles since they are quite awesome. I did play some of the SvC Fighting Games on PS2 which are quite cool even though i suck at it.
