Among all the gacha games I’ve played, Mecharashi stands out as the most notorious when it comes to progression roadblocks. At nearly every major level milestone, the game forces players to clear absurdly difficult missions just to unlock the next power-up tier, which is hard-locked behind each chapter. Until now, I’ve tolerated the nonsense Mecharashi throws at players every 5–10 levels. However, the latest progression hurdle is by far the worst I’ve encountered. For this notoriety, Mecharashi earned themselves dedicated article in Realm of Darkness that criticize this poorly designed part.
I genuinely don’t understand why Blackjack Studio designed Mecharashi’s progression system to be so unnecessarily sadistic. Every inch of progress feels like it must be paid for through suffering, which is far beyond what should be acceptable for a mobile game. If I had to compare it to something, it’s like being forced to solo fight Elder Dragons such as Fatalis for every single Guild Urgent Quest in Monster Hunter just to rank up.
To unlock what are ultimately negligible upgrades, players are pushed into an endless arms race of min-maxing their units just to survive against cheap, overpowered bosses. Either the level designers are lazy, or they have a full-on “killer DM” mindset. The level gap is so tight that even being slightly underleveled almost guarantees your units will be taken down in two or three hits. These are SSR units piloted by SSR pilots, mind you—SR and lower rarity pilots will fare even worse.
Take the Chapter 8 Urgent Quest as an example. Unlike previous milestones that required clearing two missions, this one forces players to complete three. While most Chapter 8 missions are balanced around early level 50 units, the Urgent Quest throws enemies at levels 58–59 at you. Units in the level 45–50 range get absolutely shredded. I’ve been stuck at this roadblock for over two weeks, putting in maximum effort just to overcome what is clearly a poorly calibrated difficulty spike.
At long last, I finally managed to clear all three Chapter 8 Urgent Quests but only after raising my top 12 units just to survive the ordeal. The second mission was by far the most brutal, forcing players to fight a boss that constantly spams devastating AOE attacks while also dealing with drone swarms on the far side of the map that actively power up the boss if let loose. This is not what I would call a pleasant experience for a mobile SRPG.
As much as I despise Mecharashi’s progression system, I’ll put up with the nonsense for now. There’s only one Urgent Quest left in Chapter 9, which I fully expect to repeat the same kind of artificial difficulty seen in Chapter 8. If history is any indication, clearing it will likely take another two to three weeks of grinding, all in service of an unnecessarily frustrating roadblock designed by Blackjack Studio.
